Leading by example: Ellie Dorey keeps on scoring while adapting to life as captain

They were big boots to fill when record scorer Ashlee Hincks left the club in the summer, but Ellie Dorey has stepped up for the new-look Wimbledon side and tackled her dual role head on.

Ellie Dorey has bided her time and will be the first to tell you that it is a complete team effort, and individual accolades don’t matter, but now, fully emerged in her role as captain and leading goal scorer, it is arguably the best time of her career.

She wasn’t always in the shadow of Ashlee Hincks, but after the record goal scorer moved on this past summer, it did bring Dorey into the spotlight. She is now happily forming new partnerships with Freda Ayisi, Lauren Purchase and Emily Taylor-Brown.

Having joined the Dons in 2022, she has regularly found the back of the net. The former Brighton and Hove Albion and Charlton Athletic star didn’t always have it easy, and like most women starting in the game, the pathway was not the most accessible. Raised in Devon, it was Plymouth Girls that gave Ellie her first break into the game at age 16.
